That day, the day that change some people, it was a blessing and a curse. Some even died that day. For Luke it was just another day, busy patrolling the streets of New Britain. That day it was a rather nice day out, foot patrol was easy. When the "Event" happened, it didn't seem like anything really happened. For Luke, he just felt suddenly light headed and a migraine. He was still on patrol so he had to power through the ill feeling even though calls started to pile up with strange and unusual calls for service. With the amount of calls and the types of calls, the 4th shift was held over for two added hours. By the end of the shift, Luke was clearly exhausted but other then the migraine there was no other sign that he had been changed by the "Event".
Months later the "Event" was well known and new laws quickly passed in a knee jerk reaction. The hero program was started and while some things changed and other things stayed the same, Lukes job stayed the same, he was not changed in the "Event" or so he thought.
That day started like any other day and his shift that day was the normal run of the mill stuff, almost boarding. Ten minuets before his shift end, him and his back up responded to a domestic call between a drunk father and his young daughter. Things had escalated once he saw the police cars pull up in front of the house. As Luke stepped out of his patrol car, one to could clearly hear three shots being fired and a female screaming. Luke ducked behind his car and yelled into the radio "SHOTS FIRED!" in the back ground one could hear the sound of sirens approaching. One more shot fired off and Luke and his partner with guns drawn carefully approached the now deadly scene. One male with a gun shot to the head, dead and the teen with a gun shot to the chest, barely alive. As his partner and other officers cleared the house, Luke started to give medical aide to the girl.
As Luke was giving aide to the girl, she suddenly coded. "SHE'S CODING!" He call out as he started CPR. He was giving her chest compressions "Come on, Come on" he said as he worked with his all to save the girl. As he worked, blood unknowingly started to pour out of Lukes own chest but one would not see it because of the dark uniforms and bullet resistance vest. "Come on, Come on" he repeated as he continued CPR until he himself had lost so much blood he passed out. Other offices came in to give care to the girl and Luke.
Both were brought to the hospital, the girl was nearly healed other then the bullet still in her chest but she was alive and doing well.
It was Luke who was now fighting for his life in the hospital's ICU ward.
Questions on his injuries started to go around. How was he shot? how did the girl have a bullet in her chest and not have injuries? When Luke came to several days after the shooting call, he was questioned several times from the members of IA division. Luke didn't understand what was going on. One moment he was fighting to save a life and the next he was fighting for his own and now in the hospital with what appeared to be a gun shot wound? HOW?
Luke would hear whisperings that maybe he had an ability related to the "Event". Luke wondered how that would be even possible since the "Event" took place almost 8 months ago.
Doctors would clear him a month later to return to work, but returning to work was not as easy. The IA investigation was still ongoing and as such he wouldn't be allowed on the streets. It was either take some time off or shuffling paperwork. While Luke wanted very much to work, taking time off from work would allow him to poke around and find out what happened to him.
He booked his yearly trip to California early and went surfing most of the time, but when he wasn't on the waves he was a bookworm or in this case a computerworm. A coworker and friend texted him and suggested to contact the Hero program, that what may have happened is a special power. When he saw that, he was concerned for his job.
He wanted to look into the hero program but didn't. He wanted more then ever to return to work, even if it meant sitting at a desk doing paperwork and fingerprint studies. When he did get home he would find out the IA investigation was over and that he could return to work with one provision, that he see a shrink once a week and have medical tests done to make sure he was fit for work. Of course this made his day even though the thought of seeing a shrink gave him a chill.
The medical tests that were done didn't show any signs of the injury he had taken on unknowingly. He was as fit as anyone would be at his age, still young to chase bad guys but old enough to know when to not to. With that he was allowed to go back to work on patrol on the 4th shift.
Talking to the shrink, was slow, he found it hard to open up to the female doctor but talked to her as directed but also kept to his self quite abit. Each time she tried to talk about the incident, he just explained that he passed out and doesn't remember much other then that the girl coded and he woke up in the ICU. He told the truth because that's all he knew himself. How he ended up with her injuries was just as much as a surprise to him as anyone else. However, when the doctor mentioned if he knew if he was a meta, he said no and that his blood work came back normal. The doctor laughed and told him that it wouldn't show in blood work.
However, his answer would come, but not in the way he had thought of. On the way home from the doctors appointment he accidently hit a young boy who ran out to get his ball. Luke calls 911 and starts to take care of the boy, he had a broken arm clearly and was unconscious. Not a good sign.
Luke went to take his pulse and as he did the boy would begin to heal as Luke unknowingly took on his injuries. As medics arrive Luke's body slumps forward hitting the pavement and the boy wakes up confused. Police arrive and start their investigation and notice it's an off duty police officer. A witness would tell police that the man on the ground hit the boy after the boy ran into the street in front of the car, the boy was clearly injured. The witness who also had called 911 told officers that the man had started to care for the child before the medic was showing up just as the man hit the pavement.
Waking up in the ambulance, Luke asked what happended, the medic was unsure how to explain his injury. The medic just explained it looked like he had a broken arm and maybe some soft tissue injuries. Luke remembering the boy asked about him, the medic told him the boy was fine.
Laying in the hospital Luke would pounder just what was happening to him? He had heard rumors about him being a meta but he wondered how because the 'Event' happened nearly a year ago. He pushed the jokes off just like the jokes about his last name. There was no way he was a meta.
A good friend who works at the hospital convinces Luke to contact the MNRU.
